Hanne De Backer is a Belgian baritone saxophonist and bass clarinetplayer based in Brussels. She is an energetic and versatile performer, mainly working in the field of improvised music and has left her mark on the European improv-scene in recent years. 

 

She is the founder of the  g a b b r o collective for which she acts both as a musician and an artistic and production-leader.

Since 2021 she also takes care of the editing for the music- and videoproductions of  g a b b r o .

In 2025 Hanne will be collaborating together with drummer Casper Van De Velde, DOP Seppe Van Grieken and sound-engineer Oscar Claus, creating both a new album and short documentary about the musical journey from Brussels to Gabbro.

 

Currently she is part of several active bands and projects that go from improvised to composed and contemporary music. In 2025 Hanne will be joining Jakob Bro 's Large Ensemble, Willem Heylen's The Rising Moon, Jesper Zeuthen 's Empty Pocket Sextet, 

g a b b r o trio La Nuée, Barbastelle, Woolvs Large Ensemble a.o. Besides that she has several improvised constellations with whom she has been and loves to keep on playing: together with Signe Emmeluth, Terrie Ex, Stephan Deller and Steffen Roth, Beate Wiesinger, Hamid Drake, Andreas Bral, Raf Vertessen, Marta Warelis, Paal Nilssen-Love, Ken Vandermark, Raphael Vanoli, and many others.
